Petrol Dethroned in August Auto Sales — Five Stocks Quietly Winning the Fuel-Mix Revolution
India's auto industry posted record August 2026 sales numbers, and most investors will scan the headline, note "strong demand," and move on. But buried in the data is a structural milestone that changes the investment calculus for several sectors: alternative fuels — CNG, electric, ethanol blends, and hybrids — have overtaken pure petrol vehicles in the monthly sales mix for the first time.
This isn't a one-month blip. Company filings tell a consistent story of infrastructure buildout, portfolio repositioning, and capital deployment that's been years in the making. Here are five companies where the filing trail shows who's actually prepared for a post-petrol auto market.
Maruti Suzuki (MARUTI): The CNG Market Maker
When most investors think Maruti, they think petrol hatchbacks. But Maruti has quietly become India's dominant CNG vehicle manufacturer. Per their FY23 annual report, the share of CNG-powered models in the company's sales exceeded an all-time high of 20%. More recent data from their March 2026 investor presentation reveals the extent of the lead: Maruti holds a 70% share of India's passenger CNG vehicle market (April–December 2025).
The company has fitted CNG specifications across 15 of its 19 models, including commercial vehicles. Annual CNG unit sales have surged from roughly 158,000 units to over 620,000 units over recent years. Per the same filing, the company has cumulatively avoided over 1.4 million metric tonnes of CO2 emissions from S-CNG vehicle sales alone.
What makes this defensible is the supply-side moat: Maruti has the factory-fitted CNG engineering across its platform, reducing aftermarket conversion costs for buyers and locking in a price advantage that's hard for competitors to replicate quickly.
Indraprastha Gas (IGL): Record Volumes, Record Revenue
If Maruti sells the cars, IGL sells the fuel. Per their FY26 annual report, Indraprastha Gas achieved record sales volume of 9.39 MMSCMD (million metric standard cubic meters per day), with total sales volume of 3,427.21 MSCM. The company posted gross turnover of Rs 17,785 crore and Profit After Tax of Rs 1,364 crore.
Most importantly, IGL achieved its highest-ever average CNG sales of 50 lakh kg/day in FY 2025-26. For context, their FY24 annual report noted the company had 882 CNG stations serving approximately 18 lakh vehicles, with CNG demand driven by rising fuel costs making CNG an "economical and cleaner alternative" — their words. They also flagged the introduction of CNG as a fuel for two-wheelers as a new growth vector.
IGL's geographic concentration in Delhi NCR — where CNG adoption is most mature — gives it a stable base, while newer geographical areas offer expansion runway.
Adani Total Gas (ATGL): The Penetration Data Tells the Story
Adani Total Gas's FY26 annual report contains some of the clearest data on CNG's structural adoption curve. Citing Vahan Dashboard numbers from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the filing shows CNG four-wheeler-and-above vehicle sales growing from 6.90 lakh units in FY24 to 8.99 lakh in FY25 to 11.52 lakh in FY26 — a near-doubling in two years.
The share of CNG vehicles in total four-wheeler sales has climbed from 12% in FY24 to 15% in FY25 to 17% in FY26. Total vehicle sales across all fuel types reached 2.98 crore units in FY26, with 13% year-on-year growth. The filing also notes that several states have adopted CGD policy with VAT rationalization on CNG and PNG, creating "conditions conducive to higher gas penetration."
India's CNG market is estimated at US$30.6 billion in 2026, projected to reach US$99.2 billion by 2035 at a 13.97% CAGR, according to industry data cited in recent filings from Venus Pipes. The PNGRB has authorized CGD network development across 307 geographical areas covering nearly 100% of mainland India, with targets of approximately 18,336 CNG stations by 2034 — over 8,000 are already operational.
Exide Industries (EXIDEIND): Betting Big on the Battery Side
While CNG dominates the near-term fuel shift, the EV side of the equation demands battery cells — and Exide Industries is making the largest domestic bet. Per their investor presentations, Exide has invested Rs 2,302 crore of equity in its wholly owned subsidiary Exide Energy Solutions Limited (EESL) for a greenfield lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility.
The plant is designed for 6 GWh of capacity in Phase 1, with a technical collaboration with SVOLT Technology Solutions — a specialist with roughly 3,000 professionals including 500 R&D experts. Per their Q4 FY26 investor presentation, India's advanced chemistry battery demand is expected to grow from approximately 25 GWh in 2026 to 140–150 GWh by 2030, with 60–70% of that demand coming from EVs.
The filing notes a clear shift from "import-led to localisation-led growth," with EV penetration expected to reach 70%+ for three-wheelers, 30%+ for two-wheelers, and 15%+ for passenger vehicles by 2030. Exide's cell-to-pack manufacturing capability positions it to capture value across the chain, though execution on the 6 GWh ramp remains the key risk.
Everest Kanto Cylinder (EKC): The Pick-and-Shovel Play
Every CNG vehicle needs high-pressure cylinders, and Everest Kanto is one of India's leading manufacturers. Per their earnings transcripts, the company's CNG business reported over 50% growth, driven by OEM business "coming back quite strong with more development infrastructure, more availability of CNG making the OEMs produce more CNG vehicles."
The company is also expanding — with CAPEX underway in Egypt and Mundra to serve both domestic and international demand. While they don't disclose a granular auto-vs-industrial cylinder split, management has flagged growing CV (commercial vehicle) CNG volumes as a tailwind, and noted entry into the semiconductor cylinder segment as an additional growth driver.
What Retail Investors Should Do
The fuel-mix shift in Indian auto sales is not a speculative bet — it's showing up in monthly sales data and is backed by years of infrastructure investment documented in corporate filings. But the opportunity is not uniform:
CNG-linked plays (IGL, ATGL, Maruti, EKC) benefit from infrastructure that's already built and revenue that's already flowing. CNG vehicle penetration at 17% of four-wheeler sales and climbing suggests a multi-year growth runway, especially as the government targets 18,000+ CNG stations by 2034. EV-linked plays (Exide) are earlier in the cycle — the capital is deployed but revenue ramp is still ahead. These carry more execution risk but offer larger potential returns if localization of battery manufacturing succeeds. The key risk across the theme is gas pricing: if natural gas prices spike (as they did during the 2022 crisis), CNG's cost advantage over petrol narrows. Watch PNGRB pricing policy and LNG import costs as lead indicators. For EV plays, track cell plant commissioning timelines against management guidance.
Don't chase the auto sales headline. Follow the fuel.
